Just 10 minutes by train from Nice (Villefranche-sur-Mer stop, from €1.70), Villefranche-sur-Mer is the closest and perhaps most beautiful discovery from Nice. Its bay — a natural amphitheatre of hills descending to the sea — is unanimously described as one of the entire Mediterranean's most beautiful. The colours of its facades, its covered alleys (the 13th-century Rue Obscure, France's oldest covered street), its Chapel Saint-Pierre decorated by Jean Cocteau (1957) compose an incomparable baroque picture.

Cap Ferrat, the peninsula jutting into the sea facing Villefranche, is one of the Côte d'Azur's most luxurious and most preserved spaces. Its main treasure is the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild — a pink palace inspired by Italian Renaissance splendour, built by Béatrice de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912, surrounded by 9 themed gardens (French, Spanish, Florentine, Japanese, exotic...) dominating the sea on both sides of the cape.
