Opened in summer 2024 at 3 Cours Saleya, Barbacane Bar established itself within months as one of the new references on Nice's cocktail scene. Its founder, Christophe Oggier, had the vision of a premium bar without pretension: a place to enjoy exceptional cocktails in a relaxed setting, far from the stiffness of the Riviera's stuffier addresses.
The décor plays the raw wood card — exposed beams, light oak furniture, thick plank countertop — conceived as a great cabin open to the comings and goings of the market. Cyrille, the house bartender, is the pivot of the experience: discreet, precise and passionate, he orchestrates preparations with a quiet mastery that commands admiration.
Barbacane's menu stands out for a speciality: rums. White, amber, aged, agricultural — the selection covers the major producing regions and unfolds into original creations: the Barbacane (white rum, fresh pineapple, artisanal cane syrup, lime) and Caribbean Bliss (amber rum, passion fruit, vanilla, orange bitters) are the absolute signatures. The menu includes a dozen cocktails all resonating with the same attention to detail — carefully selected spirits, house-made syrups, hand-cut ice on request.
Barbacane's major distinction: its small cigar cellar, with a selection ranging from Cuban references (Cohiba, Montecristo) to Dominican and Honduran options. A cigar-cocktail pairing absolutely worth trying on the terrace in the evening. The tapas menu offers Lebanese hummus, guacamole, cheese and charcuterie boards, sautéed prawns and composed tartines — honest, well-executed small plates.
Relaxed and festive. The clientele is eclectic — curious tourists, loyal Niçois, young professionals, older regulars. Friday and Saturday, a DJ creates a festive atmosphere without overdoing it. The terrace on Cours Saleya offers the permanent spectacle of the old town.
Signature cocktails €12–15. Tapas €6–14. Cigars from €15. Value for money considered excellent.
Highlights: Visitors acclaim the quality of the rums and the finesse of the cocktails — several sources cite Barbacane as one of Nice's best rum addresses. The Cours Saleya terrace and relaxed atmosphere are regularly praised. Cyrille's service is described as warm and expert.
Areas for improvement: The bar's modest capacity (around 50 people) can make access difficult on weekend evenings without reservation. A few visitors mention the cocktail menu could expand slightly.
Overall: Barbacane is the pleasant surprise of 2024 in Nice's bar landscape — an address that delivers on all its promises and quickly established itself as a Cours Saleya essential.
