There are cafés that have existed for so long they seem to have always been there. Les Distilleries Idéales, at 24 Rue de la Préfecture since the early 20th century, are one of those timeless places whose patina tells the story of an entire city. The sign — an old grocery-distillery — has remained, as have the barrels, and even part of the original décor, creating a Belle Époque interior of rare authenticity that today's designers could not reproduce at any budget.
Although less focused on mixology than some addresses in our selection, Les Distilleries have evolved to offer a quality Belgian brewery experience. Some evoke an almost Parisian atmosphere — the ultimate compliment in the South.
Les Distilleries' great asset: their Belgian beer list, among the most comprehensive in Nice. From Trappists to lambics, gueuzes and fruit beers, the selection is sharp. The cherry Kriek — spontaneous fermentation beer flavoured with fresh cherries — is the house's absolute signature and worth the visit alone. House aperitifs and a few classic cocktails complete the menu.
Charcuterie board, aged cheeses, a few small plates — the essentials for nibbling while drinking. No full restaurant service but solid accompaniments.
Authentic, convivial and history-laden. It feels like a genuine Niçois neighbourhood café, far from mass tourism. The terrace on Rue de la Préfecture is one of Old Nice's most pleasant for evening aperitivo. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am.
Beers €4–8. Cherry Kriek around €6. Charcuterie/cheese board €12–18.
Highlights: Regulars and connoisseurs praise the incomparable authenticity of the venue — a café that has not yielded to trendy renovation and draws a unique personality from it. The Belgian beer list is unanimously recognised as one of Nice's finest. The cherry Kriek is cited as an experience in itself.
Areas for improvement: The cocktail menu is more limited than other specialist addresses on this list. The space can feel cramped on very busy evenings. Some visitors would appreciate a more developed food offering.
Overall: Les Distilleries Idéales are one of Nice's most endearing cafés — an address like no other that perfectly embodies the spirit of an authentic, working-class neighbourhood.
