The Hotel Le Grimaldi, a HappyCulture address, occupies two Belle Epoque buildings linked by an inner courtyard, on Rue Grimaldi, in central Nice. This 4-star hotel has around 46 colourful, flowery rooms blending French chic and Italian cheer, with often-chined furniture.

The homely mood is its signature. The breakfast room turns into a tea salon in the afternoon, and an ice-cream cart, HappyTime, offers original flavours in the hall daily, between 2pm and 7pm. There is no pool, but coffee, tea and water are always available. The station, Avenue Jean-Medecin and Place Massena are a few minutes on foot, the beach about 450 metres away.

Areas for improvement: Some rooms are felt to be small. Soundproofing, in an old building, sometimes lets through noise from the courtyard or other floors. A few guests find the rates high for 4-star services, and the breakfast room a touch cramped.

Overall impression: A charming boutique hotel, central and welcoming, where the welcome and atmosphere matter as much as the setting.
