Cannes — La Croisette & Lérins Islands

40 minutes from Nice by TER (direct trains every 30 min from Nice-Ville, from €6.30), Cannes offers an alternative to Monaco for a day more oriented toward beach, culture and luxury shopping. A global city of cinema, festivals and glamour, Cannes merits a visit for its multiple facets.

La Croisette — the world's most famous seafront boulevard — is the heart of the Cannes experience: the palaces (Martinez, Carlton, Majestic), luxury boutiques, fine sandy beaches and the view over the Mediterranean and Lérins Islands. The Palais des Festivals, with its mythical steps, is freely visited outside — star handprints in the concrete are a mandatory stop.

Forville Market

Forville covered market (Tue–Sun, 7am–1pm) is one of the Côte d'Azur's finest market addresses — fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers and regional products in an early 20th-century covered hall.

Lérins Islands

Cannes' real surprise: 15 minutes by boat from the Croisette, the Lérins Islands are a haven of preserved nature — Saint-Honorat with its 5th-century Cistercian Abbey (vines, monks, island-produced wines) and Saint-Marguerite with its Royal Fort (where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned).
