Perched at 429 metres on a rocky peak overlooking the Mediterranean, between Nice and Monaco, Èze Village is probably the Côte d'Azur's most photographed and most famous medieval village. Its recognisable profile — steep rocks, stone houses, winding cobblestone alleys climbing toward castle ruins — forms the archetypal image of the Provençal hilltop village.
The climb through the village (accessible only on foot from the car park) progressively reveals increasingly breathtaking sea views. At the summit, the medieval castle ruins host the Exotic Garden of Èze — a Mediterranean cactus and succulent collection in a vertiginous setting, with the sea 400 metres below. The 360° panoramic view from the summit is regularly cited as one of France's most beautiful.
Friedrich Nietzsche stayed at Èze in 1883–1884 and wrote part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra while descending the path now bearing his name — the Nietzsche Path, a 1.5-hour steep hiking trail linking Èze-Village to Èze-bord-de-mer, with extraordinary Mediterranean views.
Èze's Fragonard branch offers free guided visits of its perfume production process — a 30-minute initiation to the art of Grasse perfume-making, with no purchase obligation.
Bus 83 from Nice (Place Masséna or Vauban stop) — 30–40 min, €1.50. Or train to Èze-bord-de-mer then walk up via the Nietzsche Path (1.5h). By car: 20 min from Nice via the Moyenne Corniche.
Nice–Èze bus €1.50. Exotic Garden €6 (reduced €4). Fragonard: free.
Highlights: Èze is unanimously described as the Côte d'Azur's finest village — the Exotic Garden view is cited as unforgettable. The Nietzsche Path is recommended for the descent by all who have done it. Free Fragonard visit very appreciated. The preserved medieval setting is photogenic at every turn.
Areas for improvement: Very busy in summer — arrive early morning or late afternoon. Souvenir boutiques can be expensive. The walk up to the village is steep and not suitable for reduced mobility.
Overall: Èze is the essential nature and heritage excursion from Nice — the French Mediterranean's most spectacular hilltop village, accessible by bus for €1.50.
