2 hours from Nice by car, the Gorges du Verdon are the most spectacular nature excursion accessible from Nice — and one of the most impressive in all of Europe. Often nicknamed 'Provence's Grand Canyon', these 25-kilometre-long gorges carved by the Verdon river reach 700 metres deep in places, with unreally turquoise waters contrasting with white and ochre limestone cliffs.
The site is discovered from the Route des Crêtes (D23) running along the canyon's upper edge — a breathtaking road with viewpoints every kilometre, including the Point Sublime (180° plunging view over the entire gorges) and the Falaise des Cavaliers.
Hiking: the Martel trail (15km, 6h, intermediate level) crosses the gorges at mid-height — one of France's finest hikes. Canoe-kayak: rental available at La Palud-sur-Verdon or Castellane. Swimming: pebble beaches at the gorge floor, accessible via paths, are paradise spots. Climbing: Verdon cliffs are among Europe's most reputed for sport climbing.
Car essential from Nice — 2h via A8 and RN85. Organised tours from Nice available (from €80/person).
Highlights: Gorges du Verdon unanimously described as Nice's finest nature excursion — the contrast between turquoise waters and white cliffs cited as 'unforgettable'. The Route des Crêtes is itself described as an experience. The Martel trail is recommended by all who have done it.
Areas for improvement: Car is essential — no direct public transport from Nice. The day is long (6–8h minimum). Very busy July–August — leave early.
Overall: Gorges du Verdon are Nice's most breathtaking nature excursion — a landscape on the scale of America's Grand Canyon, 2 hours from the Côte d'Azur.
