Saint-Paul-de-Vence — Artists' Village

30 minutes from Nice by bus 400 (from €1.50), Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the village that perhaps more than any other concentrated the great names of 20th-century art. Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, Léger, Braque, Miró — all stayed or worked here, often drawn by the particular Mediterranean light and the Colombe d'Or inn, whose walls are still covered with paintings and sculptures offered by these artists as payment.

The medieval village itself — cobblestone alleys, central fountain, 16th-century ramparts offering 360° views of the Alps and sea — is an open-air museum. Art galleries follow at every alley turn: paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics.

Fondation Maeght

500 metres from the village, Fondation Maeght is one of Europe's most remarkable modern art museums — permanent collections (Miró, Giacometti, Calder, Chagall) in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, integrated in a Mediterranean pine sculpture park.
