While Fenocchio reigns over Place Rossetti from the east, Azzurro keeps watch at its northern entrance at 1 rue Sainte-Réparate. This Niçois family glacier received in 2014 the title of France's 2nd best glacier. Recognition that brought new notoriety without transforming its philosophy: simplicity, quality ingredients and generous portions.
Azzurro's absolute signature is its waffle cone made in front of you — crispy, warm, lightly caramelised, it adds extra crunch and flavour to the tasting. The cone preparation in front of the client has become one of Old Nice's little spectacles. Sorbets are the house speciality: less sweet than average, they let the fruit or aromatic express itself more fully. The range includes original flavours — lemon-ginger, orange blossom, grapefruit, kalamansi (rare Asian citrus), passion fruit.
Azzurro offers a selection of 20–30 flavours — fewer than Fenocchio, but each mastered to perfection. Ingredients are carefully selected: Tahiti vanilla, 100% natural pistachio (hazelnut colour, not bright green), quality chocolate. Sicilian nougat, fior di latte and citrus sorbets merit special mention.
Intimate, warm and authentically Niçois. The team is described as smiling and welcoming. The Sainte-Réparate terrace, slightly set back from the Place Rossetti bustle, offers a more tranquil tasting. Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am–11pm.
Scoop from €2. Homemade waffle cone included.
Highlights: The homemade waffle cone is unanimously described as a major differentiator — its warmth, crunch and flavour transform the tasting. Low-sugar citrus sorbets are cited as Nice's finest. The authenticity of the small Niçois family business is appreciated. The 4.6/5 rating on major platforms confirms consistency.
Areas for improvement: Fewer flavours than Fenocchio. Hours (closed Mon-Tue, opens at 11am) can constrain early visitors. The space is relatively small.
Overall: Azzurro is the quality alternative to Fenocchio for visitors who prefer a more intimate atmosphere and less-sweet sorbets — a connoisseur's address that fully merits its 2014 national title.
