Some addresses are part of a city's identity. Fenocchio, at the heart of Place Rossetti since 1966, is one of them. Awarded the 1st Prize of the Bol d'Or of French ice cream makers, this family glacier has become over the decades far more than an ice cream shop — it is a Niçois ritual, a mandatory stop, an institution whose name alone makes mouths water. The queue that sometimes snakes down to the bottom of the alley is a reliable indicator of its worldwide reputation.
What made the Fenocchio legend is primarily its audacity: where other glaciers offer twenty safe flavours, Fenocchio displays 96 — and not unassuming ones. Alongside the great classics (Tahiti vanilla, dark chocolate, strawberry, pistachio), the house offers creations that are talked about well beyond Nice: tomato-basil, violet, Swiss chard tart (sweet Niçois speciality), beer, cactus, lavender, thyme, sabayon, ginger, pink pepper.
Everything is crafted in an attached modern laboratory from carefully selected ingredients — fresh seasonal fruit, quality purées, no artificial flavourings in the premium range. Sorbets are light, intensely fruity and remarkably balanced in sweetness. Cream ices have a smooth texture recalling the finest transalpine gelaterias. The take-home tub range lets you bring back a frozen souvenir from Place Rossetti.
Fenocchio offers two points of sale in Old Nice: the flagship at Place Rossetti (2 place Rossetti — the largest terrace, the most festive atmosphere) and the rue de la Poissonnerie boutique (6 rue de la Poissonnerie — quieter, ideal for a pause away from the crowds).
Festive, popular and resolutely Niçois. Place Rossetti in the evening, with its illuminated baroque facades and dozens of cones glittering under the lights — it is one of the Nice images visitors carry with them forever. Open daily 9am–midnight (seasonal closure mid-November to mid-February).
Ice cream scoop €2. Pastry €2. 2-scoop cone €3.50. Take-home tub by size.
Highlights: Fenocchio is cited in practically every Nice travel guide as the essential gourmet stop — worldwide consensus is total. Flavour creativity is unanimously praised, particularly fruity sorbets and regional creations. Quality is described as consistent over decades. Midnight opening 7 days a week is a considerable asset for summer evenings. Place Rossetti's setting adds a unique experiential dimension.
Areas for improvement: Queues can be very long in high season (July-August), sometimes 20–30 minutes. Some recent reviews mention slightly reduced portions and rising prices. Place Rossetti can be so crowded there is no seating to be found.
Overall: Fenocchio is THE Nice glacier — the absolute institution that alone justifies the city's icy reputation. Unmissable on any stay, however many past visits.
