Place Saint-François, one of Old Nice's most beautiful squares with its baroque fountain and relative tranquillity, has long hosted one of the most endearing addresses on the Nice ice cream scene. Néron Glacier Pâtissier, run by Niçois Loris Gallo, is what one calls a complete glacier-pâtissier — an artisan capable of producing both an exceptional ice cream and a remarkably fine homemade pastry.
Loris's philosophy: quality ingredients, mastery of sweetness, fruits sometimes direct from his family garden. Peach and strawberry, in season only, are outstanding according to the most discerning critics. The range includes around twenty traditional flavours — reliable values mastered to perfection — without seeking originality for its own sake, but with genuine research into gustatory balance.
Granitas are Néron's great speciality — exquisite according to many visitors, particularly peach and strawberry in season. Verrines (ice cream and sorbet assemblies with garnishes), glacé pralines, ice cream cakes and milkshakes complete an offer broader than most glaciers. Place Saint-François's terrace allows pleasant tasting in a calm baroque setting.
Intimate and warm. Néron is less crowded than Fenocchio and Azzurro on Place Rossetti, making it a much-appreciated alternative for locals avoiding the crowds. Open 9am–8pm.
Scoop from €2. Granita from €3. Milkshake €5–7. Ice cream cakes on order.
Highlights: Néron's granitas are unanimously cited as Nice's finest — seasonal peach and strawberry receive constant praise. Homemade pastry quality (particularly pistachio éclairs) is regularly praised. Place Saint-François's setting is described as one of the most pleasant for tranquil tasting. The team's generous, kind welcome is very appreciated.
Areas for improvement: Some reviews mention slightly variable service depending on staff member. Terrace capacity is limited. Busy periods can create a slight wait.
Overall: Néron is the connoisseur's discovery on the Old Nice ice cream scene — less celebrated than Fenocchio but equally memorable for granita, glacé pastry and seasonal fruit ice cream lovers.
