If there is one place in Nice that every child visiting the city must have explored, it is Castle Hill. This 92-metre hill dominating Old Nice, the port and the Baie des Anges is the most emblematic green and play space in the city — and one of the rare ones that is entirely free. Access is on foot from the bottom of Old Nice (steps from rue des Ponchettes), by the free lift from the Quai des États-Unis, or aboard the Little Tourist Train.
At the summit, families discover a breathtaking 360° panorama — the Promenade des Anglais on one side, Port Lympia and the orange rooftops of Old Nice on the other, snow-capped Alps in the background on clear days. Wonder is total, whatever the age.
The Hill hosts one of the Côte d'Azur's largest and most modern inclusive play areas: 1,600 m² of equipment accessible to all children, including those with disabilities. Climbing structures, slides, adapted swings, sensory games and imaginative spaces keep children occupied for hours. The space is shaded and secured.
The 33-metre artificial waterfall — fed by water year-round — is one of children's permanent fascination points, approachable via a dedicated path. The ruins of the medieval castle (11th century) and the wooden castle model allow initiation into Nice's history. The listed Castle Cemetery presents remarkable funerary architecture that intrigues curious children.
Vast lawns, shaded benches and several sea-view terraces allow family picnicking. A café-restaurant with sea view terrace allows dining without departing. The park is open April to September until 8pm, October to March until 6pm.
Entirely free access. Free lift. Only the Little Train is paid (€6–8/adult, €3–5/child).
Highlights: Castle Hill is unanimously cited as one of Nice's finest family outings — free, spectacular, varied. The new inclusive play area is praised as one of the finest in the whole region. The panoramic view over the Baie des Anges is described by visitors from around the world as memorable. The lift facilitates access for pushchairs and people with reduced mobility.
Areas for improvement: Footfall can be very high in summer — early morning arrival is recommended. The pedestrian path from Old Nice is quite steep for pushchairs and young children (lift recommended). Catering can be expensive for families.
Overall: Castle Hill is Nice's free family jewel — the essential address recommended first to all families visiting the city, whatever the weather.
