In Nice, there is a place that has been part of the city's childhood heritage for decades, whose name alone makes children's eyes light up. Parc Phoenix, at 405 promenade des Anglais between the sea and the Nice-Ouest quarter, is far more than an animal park — it is a living ecosystem bringing together across 7 hectares an exceptional botanical garden, an animal collection of 3,000 individuals from 150 species, and play spaces accessible to all ages.
Parc Phoenix's absolute symbol is its Green Diamond — a giant pyramidal greenhouse of 7,000 m² and 25 metres high, one of Europe's largest. Inside, six tropical and subtropical microclimates host plants sometimes 8 million years old, rare orchids, carnivorous plants and exotic fauna — free-flying tropical birds, iguanas, tortoises, small Nile crocodiles and wetland fish. Total sensory immersion, even in the rain.
In the outdoor gardens, children are immediately won over by the semi-free animals roaming the lawns: peacocks, swans, ducks and Burgundy hens. In the enclosures, the house stars delight everyone: wallabies and kangaroos, Madagascar lemurs, Asian otters, porcupines, tufted-ear marmosets, flamingos. Educational workshops in season allow children to deepen their knowledge of the species on display.
Included with the entry ticket: vast play areas with slides, roundabouts, spring toys and see-saws, and a bamboo maze children love. A paid tree climbing space is available for the more adventurous. In summer, the City of Nice installs a seasonal pool with swimming lessons, water games and supervised aquagym. The park's snack bar allows on-site picnicking or refuelling without leaving the grounds.
Adult €5.20. Child 3–11 years €3. Free under 3. Nice Museum Pass applicable. Tram line 2 station 'Arénas - Aéroport' then bus 23.
Highlights: Parc Phoenix is described by families as Nice's most essential family activity — a place combining botany, zoology and leisure in an exceptional setting at a remarkably accessible municipal price. The Green Diamond greenhouse generates wonder in children and adults alike. Semi-free animals (peacocks, swans) create much-appreciated direct contact moments. Tram access makes the visit easy for car-free families.
Areas for improvement: Some visitors contextualise the animal collection relative to large regional zoos — the park is not an exhaustive exhibition zoo. The summer pool is appreciated but limited. On busy holiday days, the play areas can be overcrowded.
Overall: Parc Phoenix is Nice's finest family value — a full day of nature, animal and play discoveries for under €10 per family, in the heart of the city.
