In Nice, the sunset is no minor detail. Facing due south, the bay catches the light head-on, and each evening the sky transforms into a gradient of pink, orange and purple over the Mediterranean. You just need to know where to stand. Here are our favourite spots to miss nothing of the golden hour.
Castle Hill, the Great Classic
It is the most famous viewpoint, and for good reason. From the summit of Castle Hill, 93 metres above the sea, your gaze embraces the whole Baie des Anges on one side and Port Lympia on the other. At sunset, the Promenade des Anglais lights up below while the sky blazes. The free lift from quai des États-Unis avoids the climb on foot. Arrive twenty minutes before sunset to have time to find your spot.
A Rooftop, a Cocktail, the Sea
To experience the moment with a glass in hand, Nice's rooftop bars are unbeatable. Several city-centre hotels offer panoramic terraces facing the sea, where you sip a cocktail as the sun goes down. The atmosphere is more festive than on the hill, often with a DJ at the end of the day. Book in season, these spots are sought-after.
The Promenade des Anglais at Water Level
Sometimes the simplest is the best. Going down onto the pebbles of the Promenade des Anglais and watching the sun touch the horizon, almost feet in the water, remains an unforgettable experience. Walk west, towards the airport, where the coast curves and where the sun literally plunges into the sea at the end of the season. The pebbles keep the day's warmth, perfect for sitting.
The Mont Boron Secret
East of the city, Mont Boron is a corner visitors often overlook. This wooded hill, dotted with villas and trails, offers spectacular views over the Villefranche harbour on one side and the Bay of Nice on the other. At sunset, the light there is exceptional, and the calm contrasts with the bustle of the centre. Ideal for a romantic end to the day far from the crowds.
The Right Timing
Sunset time varies from 5pm in December to nearly 9:30pm in June. The most beautiful skies often occur when a few clouds catch the light. And don't leave too quickly. The most beautiful moment sometimes comes fifteen minutes after the sun has disappeared, when the sky turns intense pink and the city lights up. This is what photographers call the blue hour.
