Matisse Museum

Must-see Historic setting Matisse Collection
About

Nestled in the heart of the residential Cimiez district, the Matisse Museum is a place of pilgrimage for art lovers. Housed in a superb 17th-century ocher-red Genoese villa, surrounded by an olive grove, the museum offers an intimate and serene setting, perfectly in tune with the artist's work. It was here that Matisse lived and worked for part of his life, and the museum holds the largest collection of his works, with nearly 800 pieces.

The chronological tour traces sixty years of creation, from the early still lifes and Fauvist canvases of the Nice period to the bold cut-paper works of his later years. You can admire masterpieces such as 'Flowers and Ceramics' or 'Blue Nude IV', as well as personal objects, costumes, stained glass, and the famous studies for the Vence chapel, offering a complete and intimate vision of his creative process. About 200 works are permanently on display, regularly renewed through a program of temporary exhibitions and loans.

Atmosphere: Calm and contemplative. The morning light filters through the shutters, bathing the rooms in a soft brightness. In the afternoon, the visit naturally extends into the gardens of the nearby Cimiez monastery, where Matisse is buried. The museum is particularly appreciated by locals, who benefit from free admission and sometimes come for just a few minutes to see a specific work.

Prices: Permanent collection and temporary exhibitions: €10 (full price). Free for under-18s, students, and residents of the Métropole (upon proof). Also free on the first Sunday of the month.

Visitor reviews

Positive points: Visitors are won over by the exceptional setting of the museum, this 17th-century Genoese villa nestled in a green setting. Many emphasize the intimacy of the place, which contrasts with the larger, more institutional museums, and allows for a real closeness to the works. The richness of the collection is also praised, as is the possibility for residents of the Métropole to come for free, even for just fifteen minutes. The passionate guides and recent acquisitions, such as the recent Still Life bequeathed by the Duthuit family, are regularly mentioned.

Points for improvement: Many of you have expressed the desire to see a café or restaurant developed to extend the museum experience in this enchanting setting. The museum has confirmed that such a project is under study. Some visitors also regret that not all works are permanently displayed, but the regular rotation of exhibitions is also seen as an incentive to return.
