Marc Chagall National Museum

Must-see Biblical Message National museum
About

The Marc Chagall National Museum is a sanctuary dedicated to the painter's spiritual and poetic work. Inaugurated in 1973, designed by the architect AndrΓ© Gomis with the direct involvement of Chagall himself, the museum was conceived to showcase a major cycle: The Biblical Message. Seventeen large canvases illustrating Genesis, Exodus, and the Song of Songs are bathed in carefully controlled light, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and color.

Beyond this founding cycle, the museum presents a unique collection of preparatory drawings, gouaches, prints, and sculptures. The concert hall, adorned with a mosaic and three stained glass windows, regularly hosts classical music concerts. The collection offers an intimate dive into the artist's symbolic universe, where biblical, amorous, and circus motifs blend in an explosion of colors.

Atmosphere: Serene and spiritual. The natural light streaming through the large picture windows brings the canvases to life. The small exterior garden, conceived as a meditation space, extends the visit. Crowds are moderate in the early morning and late afternoon.

Prices: Permanent collection and temporary exhibitions: €10 (full price). Free for under-26s (EU citizens) and on the first Sunday of the month.

Visitor reviews

Positive points: Art lovers are unanimous: the scenography of the Biblical Message is exceptional, with natural light wonderfully enhancing the canvases. Many emphasize the emotion that emanates from this cycle, and the beauty of the stained glass windows in the concert hall. The peaceful setting and garden are also highly appreciated, offering a haven of calm after the visit. The quality of the audioguides and the opportunity to attend concerts in such an intimate setting are regularly praised.

Points for improvement: Some visitors find the museum modest in size and would like to see more works by the artist, beyond the biblical cycle. A few reviews mention that signage to access the museum from the city center could be improved. During the high season, attendance can be high, and it is advisable to book.
