Cimiez Arenas and Monastery

3rd-century Roman arenas 3 Louis Bréa masterpieces Nice Jazz Festival in July Matisse & Dufy tombs
About

On the Cimiez hill — 25 minutes from Nice centre by bus (lines 15 or 17) — exceptional heritage density concentrates summarising 2000 years of city history: the remains of the Roman city of Cemenelum (capital of the Roman province of the Maritime Alps), the 3rd-century Roman Arenas, the 14th-century Franciscan Monastery and the Archaeological Museum.

The Cimiez Roman Arenas are Nice's best-preserved ancient monuments — an amphitheatre built in the 3rd century AD for Cemenelum, then numbering 20,000 inhabitants. In summer, the Arenas host the Nice Jazz Festival (July) and other open-air concerts.

The Franciscan Monastery

Founded in the 14th century, Cimiez Monastery is one of Nice's most moving monuments. Its church holds three masterpieces by Louis Bréa — the 'Niçois Primitive', 15th-century painter whose triptychs are among the region's most precious: the Pietà (1475), the Deposition from the Cross and the Virgin of Mercy. The Franciscan garden with century-old olive trees holds the tombs of Matisse and Dufy.

The Cemenelum Archaeological Museum

Adjoining the arenas, the Archaeological Museum (combined entry) displays ceramics, coins, mosaics and bronzes found during the Roman site excavations.

Pricing

Arenas + Archaeological Museum €5. Monastery and garden free. Bus 15 or 17 from Nice-Ville.

Guest Reviews

Highlights: The Roman Arenas + Franciscan Monastery + nearby Matisse Museum combination is described as the finest cultural half-day available in Nice. The Monastery Bréas are cited as unrecognised masterpieces of medieval art. The Franciscan garden with Matisse and Dufy tombs is very appreciated. The Jazz Festival in the Arenas described as a unique experience.

Areas for improvement: Cimiez is 25 min by bus — less accessible on foot. The arenas are not as impressive as Arles or Nîmes. Signage between the various Cimiez sites improvable.

Overall: Cimiez is Nice's most heritage-dense destination — 2000 years of history (Roman, medieval and modern) in a half-day in a calm residential quarter, with Matisse as the cherry on top.
