Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, on Place Rossetti, is Old Nice's most important monument and the architectural symbol of the Niçois baroque tradition. Dedicated to Nice's patron saint — Saint Réparate, a 3rd-century Christian martyr — the cathedral was built in its current form in the 17th century by Jean-André Guibert, in a baroque style inspired by the great Roman and Genoese cathedrals.
Its dome covered in green and yellow glazed tiles is Old Nice's visual landmark from Castle Hill heights. The interior reveals exceptional decorative richness: 15 lateral chapels adorned with baroque altars, 17th–18th-century Niçois school paintings, stucco and marble. The three monumental organs make the cathedral a natural concert hall of exceptional acoustic quality.
Place Rossetti itself is an urban masterpiece — surrounded by coloured baroque facades, animated by café and restaurant terraces, named after 17th-century Niçois poet Joseph Rossetti. Fenocchio ice creams — Nice's most famous glacerie, founded in 1966 — offers its 96 flavours in an incomparable baroque setting.
Free entry. Mass and concert times visible on the cathedral website.
Highlights: Sainte-Réparate Cathedral is described as one of France's finest baroque cathedrals — an astonishingly rich interior for a city of this size. Place Rossetti is unanimously cited as Old Nice's most pleasant meeting point. Nearby Fenocchio is consistently cited as essential. Cathedral concerts described as a rare experience.
Areas for improvement: Interior visit can be disrupted during services. Main entrance is on a narrow alley — difficult to photograph. The square is very crowded in high season.
Overall: Sainte-Réparate and Place Rossetti are Old Nice's beating heart — the baroque cathedral, lively terraces and Fenocchio combination makes it the ideal stopping point of any neighbourhood walk.
