Dominating Old Nice and the Promenade des Anglais from its 93-metre height, Castle Hill is one of Nice's most visited sites — and one of the least well-known in its richness. Visitors come first for the view, which is indeed spectacular: a 360° panorama over the Bay of Angels (westward, the Promenade and airport), Old Nice with its orange-tiled rooftops, Port Lympia (eastward, framed by hills), and on clear days, the snowy Alps on the horizon.
The hill is a free public park of 9 hectares — lawns, spectacular artificial waterfalls, gardens, monumental cemeteries (Jewish and Catholic), children's play areas. Exceptional green space for a major Mediterranean city, accessible on foot from Old Nice (15 min) or by the free lift from quai des États-Unis.
The castle giving the hill its name was demolished in 1706 on Louis XIV's orders — only ruins remain today, plus the Archaeological Crypt (excavations of 6th-century BC Greek, medieval and modern remains, €3 access). The Bellanda Tower (19th century) offers additional sea views from its terrace — Berlioz reportedly composed part of his works here during his Nice stay.
The descent on the Port side via the panoramic stairs is one of Nice's finest — the Port Lympia views from the staircase switchbacks are remarkable.
Hill access free. Lift free. Archaeological Crypt €3. Bellanda Tower €3.
Highlights: The Castle Hill view is unanimously described as Nice's finest — the Bay of Angels, old town and Port Lympia combination is unforgettable. The free lift is very appreciated. Waterfalls are a pleasant surprise. The park is described as Nice city centre's most pleasant green space for families.
Areas for improvement: Lift can be out of service — always plan for stairs. Very busy at weekends in high season. The foot climb from Old Nice is steep.
Overall: Castle Hill is an essential stop of every Nice visit — the summit view alone justifies the trip, and the free park is an exceptional bonus.
