Old Nice is the city's historical and living heart — a 1.5 km² quarter concentrating over 2000 years of Mediterranean history between Place Masséna, the sea and Castle Hill. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 for its villégiature heritage and baroque architecture, this quarter is one of France's most authentic and best-preserved baroque urban ensembles.
What strikes first is the colour: Old Nice's facades display ochres, yellows, oranges, pinks and reds inherited from Piedmontese and Genoese influence — a Mediterranean palette changing with the day's light, creating radically different atmospheres at 7am under oblique light and at 6pm under the setting sun.
Old Nice is discovered on foot, ideally from Place Masséna heading up via rue Saint-François de Paule — which lines the Nice Opera and Maison Auer (confiserie since 1820). From there, Cours Saleya (market, cafés, terraces) forms the central axis before heading up via rue Droite (art galleries, Palais Lascaris), rue Pairolière (crafts) and Place Rossetti (cathedral, Fenocchio ice creams).
Old Nice's true richness is in its secondary alleys: the rue Obscure (13th century, Nice's oldest covered street), vaulted passages, hidden squares, discreet stairs leading upward. Every detour rewards — a baroque fountain, a trompe-l'œil painted facade, an inscription in Nissart (the local Occitan language).
Tram line 1 access — Opéra Vieille-Ville or Cathédrale Vieille-Ville stop. On foot from the Promenade des Anglais (20 min). Walking shoes recommended — cobblestone alleys.
Highlights: Old Nice is unanimously described as Nice's most beautiful and most authentic part — a quarter captivating on every visit whatever the season. The coloured facades early morning are cited among Europe's most beautiful. The lively Mediterranean atmosphere is judged incomparable. The UNESCO inscription is perceived as well-deserved.
Areas for improvement: Very busy in summer — arrive early morning to enjoy without crowds. Some alleys can be noisy in the evening with nightlife. Tourist shops invade some main axes.
Overall: Old Nice is Nice's absolute heritage experience — a lively coloured baroque quarter UNESCO-inscribed that forms the essential stop of every city visit.
