Inaugurated in 2013, the Promenade du Paillon is the masterpiece of Nice's urban transformation of the last decade — a 12-hectare linear park traversing Nice's historic centre north to south, from Place Masséna to MAMAC (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art), passing by the Exhibition Palace and Nice Theatre.
This park was created by covering the underground expressway and the former Paillon riverbed, transforming a road axis into a green promenade. The result is remarkable: fountains and water mirrors (including the famous Place Masséna 'water mirror', in summer invaded by playing children), tropical lawns, flowering pergolas, children's play areas, contemporary sculptures, a rose garden, palm and Mediterranean vegetation avenues. In summer, open-air concerts and cultural events take over the space.
Place Masséna, at the park's southern end, is Nice's main square — its scarlet red facades, arcades and 7 pole statues by artist Jaume Plensa (the 'Conversations à Nice', white resin figures dressed in words) form an architectural and artistic ensemble among the Côte d'Azur's most remarkable.
Free access. Open 24h/7.
Highlights: The Promenade du Paillon is unanimously described as Nice's finest urban achievement of recent years. The summer water mirror is cited as Nice's most lively and joyful place. The tropical vegetation surprises and enchants. It is the city centre's reference family space. Place Masséna with Plensa statues is regularly cited as photogenic.
Areas for improvement: Very busy in summer — some zones can be crowded. Summer heat can be intense on open areas.
Overall: The Promenade du Paillon is Nice's most successful urban transformation — a free, lively park at the city's heart that reconciles heritage, nature and modernity.
