Maison Alef is a young perfumery in Old Nice, recognisable by its vibrant blue front that recalls the Majorelle garden. The house was founded in 2020 by two friends who met at university in Nice, Houssem and Bilal. Their idea: to offer affordable, local perfumes while paying tribute to their Provençal and Tunisian roots.
The fragrances are designed and made in Grasse. The stance is deliberate: every perfume is unisex, so as not to box the customer in. The range, kept tight on purpose, blends floral, fruity, woody and leather notes. Rouge Docile is the best-seller.
The perfumes are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. The shop's decor, designed by the founders, changes with the seasons. Open Tuesday to Saturday.
Highlights: Customers often fall for the fragrances, Rouge Docile chief among them, regularly singled out as a favourite. The quality of the materials and the high concentration come up in feedback: unlike more diluted perfumes, one dab is enough to last the day. The shop charms with its careful decor, and the welcome is described as warm and professional. Affordable prices for local creation are another draw.
Areas for improvement: The collection is deliberately limited, centred on the house brand: you come for one world, not a wide choice of labels. The unisex stance does not speak to everyone. The shop is small and the hours limited, Tuesday to Saturday.
Overall impression: A lovely gem of Old Nice for anyone after a local, original, well-made perfume. Worth trying on your skin before deciding, given the concentration.
