Molinard occupies a discreet shop in Old Nice, a short walk from the City Hall and Place Masséna. The house was born in Grasse in 1849. Five generations of the same family have run it, which makes it one of the oldest perfume houses in France. It holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, a rare distinction for a perfumer.
The Nice address is more than a sales counter. You will find the house collections, a small museum with bottles signed by Lalique and Baccarat, and above all the creation workshops. Molinard was the first house to open them to the general public, back in 1994.
Several formats coexist, from the fragrance bar (20 minutes, around €30) to the full one-hour workshop (around €69, 50 ml bottle). An expert guides each participant: theory first (raw materials, the structure of a perfume), then practice (smelling, top, heart and base notes). The formula you create is archived. You can reorder it later.
Habanita, launched in 1921, remains the house's cult perfume. The shop opens Monday to Saturday, and daily in high season. Booking is advised for workshops.
Highlights: Visitors describe an authentic, unflashy shop where staff take their time. The advisers come up often in feedback, named individually, for their product knowledge and their patience with beginners. The creation workshop is the standout: several recall a session booked as short that ran well over, in a relaxed mood, in small groups, sometimes split across French and English tables. Leaving with a personal bottle whose formula is kept on file makes a lasting impression. Many call it a fine gift idea and a moment apart, for adults and children alike.
Areas for improvement: The welcome is not always consistent. A few customers report cooler advice in the shop, especially at the height of the summer rush. Signing up for workshops on site could be smoother. Parking nearby remains difficult.
Overall impression: A safe bet for understanding perfume at the source, halfway between a shop and a museum. You come for the house fragrances and stay for the workshop.
