La Rotonde — Hôtel Negresco

The Rotonde is the brasserie of the legendary Hotel Negresco, on the Promenade des Anglais. It is one of the most photographed rooms in Nice: a funfair decor, with a wooden carousel and its horses, automata and a fairy-tale atmosphere in the house style. Highlights: The decor is one of a kind: a carousel of wooden horses under an animated dome like a starry sky, crossed by birds and planes, within the Negresco's Belle Epoque setting. The refined Mediterranean cuisine of Meilleur Ouvrier de France chef Virginie Basselot is praised, Salers rib steak, scallop carpaccio with caviar, carefully made desserts. The French-style service, attentive and theatrical, with carving at the table and cocktails prepared before you, leaves a strong impression.

Areas for improvement: Prices are high, the menu running from €75 to €110, and a few guests find the portions tight for the price. The room can be noisy. The renovated, more pared-down decor divides opinion, some missing the former spirit. A few one-off service slips are reported.
