Le Carré d'Or — Luxury Quarter

They call it the Carré d'Or, and the name says it all. This gilded Niçois perimeter — bounded by Place Masséna, avenue de Verdun, boulevard Victor Hugo and rue de France — is the beating heart of luxury and high-end fashion in Nice. Here, within a few streets, the world's greatest houses have gathered their official boutiques: leather goods, haute couture, jewellery, prestige watchmaking.

The ideal itinerary begins at the corner of Place Masséna along the pedestrian avenue de Verdun — Hermès at number 8, Cartier a few steps further, Tiffany & Co at 6, Omega at 10. Continue to rue Paradis, a fully pedestrian, tree-lined street: Chanel at 6, Emporio Armani at 1, Repetto, Longchamp and a selection of contemporary designers. Avenue de Suède, extending Verdun toward the sea, is home to Louis Vuitton at number 2 — opposite the Jardin Albert 1er, in a carefully restored Haussmann building.

Louis Vuitton Nice

The monogram canvas house occupies a two-floor space opposite the Jardin Albert 1er. Iconic leather goods (Speedy, Neverfull, Capucines), luggage, women's and men's ready-to-wear, shoes, watches, Fine Jewelry — the entirety of the house's universe is represented. Open Monday to Saturday 10am–7:15pm.

Hermès Nice

The house of silks and saddles offers at 8 avenue de Verdun an elegant, hushed space featuring complete collections — silks, leathers, ready-to-wear, perfumes, home décor. The welcome is notably warm. Open Monday–Saturday 10am–1pm and 2:15pm–7pm.

Chanel Nice

Established at 6 rue Paradis, the Niçois boutique of the house founded by Coco offers 2.55 and Boy bags, ready-to-wear, cosmetics and perfumes including the legendary N°5. Appointments available for major pieces. Open Monday–Saturday 10am–7pm.

Quarter Atmosphere

Le Carré d'Or is simultaneously a shopping destination and an architectural walk. Haussmann buildings, arcades and café terraces lining the streets create an atmosphere of relaxed Mediterranean luxury — elegant but not intimidating. The tax refund office on rue Paradis facilitates VAT refunds for non-EU customers.

Highlights: Le Carré d'Or is cited as one of the finest luxury retail areas outside Paris — the concentration of great houses in such a small and pleasant perimeter is unique in the region. Welcome at Hermès and Chanel is described as particularly attentive. Louis Vuitton is often the first stop for international visitors arriving in Nice. The quarter's Mediterranean atmosphere — palm trees, terraces, light — makes shopping even more enjoyable.

Areas for improvement: Queues outside some boutiques (particularly LV) can be long on summer Saturdays. Some visitors mention inconsistent welcome depending on the sales adviser. Parking in the quarter is very difficult.

Overall: Le Carré d'Or is simply the reference luxury destination on the Côte d'Azur between Monaco and Cannes. A quarter worth walking even without buying — the window displays and architecture make it a promenade in itself.
