While Maison Auer already features in our Crafts & Souvenirs category for its legendary candied fruits, it is here, in Chocolateries & Confiseries, that it reveals the other facet of its excellence: artisan chocolate production of over 50 references, entirely made in its laboratory adjoining 7 rue Saint-François de Paule, without glucose, colouring or added fat — since 1820.
The boutique décor — intact Florentine rococo since 1936, crystal chandeliers, gilt, mahogany display cases, cherubs — creates a setting that makes every chocolate purchase a memorable experience.
Auer chocolates come in over 50 references: hand-rolled truffles (in raw cacao), fresh cream ganaches, fine pralines (caramelised almonds and hazelnuts coated), dark chocolate mendiants, praline rochers, orangettes (candied orange peel in dark chocolate), liqueur chocolates. The assorted chocolate ballotin (€33.60) is one of the most appreciated Niçois gifts.
Alongside chocolates: homemade fruit pastes, Provence calissons (€21.50), nougats and soft caramels. At Christmas and Easter, the windows transform into ephemeral works of art.
Assorted chocolate ballotin €33.60. Homemade truffles box €29. Calissons €21.50. Orangettes €24.
Highlights: The boutique décor generates universal wonder — described as 'Nice's most beautiful shop' by many visitors. No-additive chocolates are unanimously appreciated for their finesse. Homemade truffles and orangettes are cited as unrivalled specialities. Gift ballotins are described as Nice's finest chocolate souvenirs.
Areas for improvement: Closed Sundays and Mondays. Prices consistent with artisanal quality but high for some budgets. Some recent reviews mention variable welcome.
Overall: Maison Auer is Nice's most emblematic chocolaterie-confiserie — a bicentenary institution whose décor and products fully justify the detour.
