Nice is one of those cities that reveals its richness progressively — the more time you spend, the more hidden treasures you discover. But if you only have 48 hours, here is the itinerary designed to see the essentials without rushing, living each moment with the intensity it deserves.
Day 1 — The Soul of the City
Morning: Cours Saleya at Dawn
Get up early. Very early. Arrive at Cours Saleya at 7am — before the tourists wake up, before even the café tables are set up. The flower and local produce market begins to hum at this hour: restaurateurs shop, Niçois merchants chat in Nissart, mimosa and rose bouquets fill the air with an intoxicating fragrance. This is real Niçois life, the kind few visitors ever see.
After the market, slip into the labyrinth of Old Nice — the 16th-century alleys with ochre, yellow and pink facades, the hidden squares, the rue Obscure (France's oldest covered street), the Chapelle de la Miséricorde and its spectacular baroque interior. Head up to rue Pairolière for a pissaladière from the local bakery — €2 a slice, standing in the alley.
Afternoon: Castle Hill
After lunch on the terraces of Place Rossetti (with a Fenocchio ice cream for dessert — essential), take the free lift from quai des États-Unis to Castle Hill. The panoramic view from the summit — 93 metres above the sea — is simply one of France's most beautiful views: the the Mediterranean arcing westward, the Promenade des Anglais, the turquoise-reflected Port Lympia, and the snowy Alps on the horizon in clear weather.
Evening: Promenade des Anglais at Sunset
The Promenade des Anglais at sunset is a unique moment — the sky turns pink and orange over the Mediterranean, the pebbles glisten in the last rays. Walk to the Negresco hotel to admire its Belle Époque facade, then return to the centre for dinner in Old Nice.
Day 2 — Culture and Excursion
Morning: Cimiez and Matisse
Take bus 15 or 17 up to Cimiez — the aristocratic quarter perched on Nice's heights. Begin at the Matisse Museum (€10, free on the 1st Sunday of the month) with its 200 original works in a 17th-century Roman-style villa. Then stroll in the Franciscan garden where Matisse rests among century-old olive trees.
Afternoon: Monaco or Èze
Choose your excursion based on your mood. Monaco by TER (22 min, €3.90) for the Casino, the Rock and Port Hercule. Or Èze Village by bus (30 min, €1.50) for the 360° view from the Exotic Garden perched at 429 metres.
Final Evening
An evening cocktail at a rooftop bar with sea view — then a last meal in a Niçois bistrot for petits farcis and a glass of Provence rosé. Nice has this rare particularity: it makes you feel, even in two days, that you have lived something truly unique.
