It takes just ten minutes by train from Nice to completely change the scenery. Villefranche-sur-Mer nestles at the end of one of the deepest and most beautiful harbours in the Mediterranean. Its ochre and pink houses are reflected in deep blue water, and its intact charm makes it one of the favourite escapes of the Niçois themselves.
An Exceptional Harbour
The Villefranche harbour is so deep that it regularly welcomes cruise liners and long served as a naval port. Protected by Cap Ferrat and Mont Boron, its waters are calm and translucent. The panorama from the heights, with the Cap Ferrat peninsula on the horizon, ranks among the most beautiful on the Riviera.
The Old Town and the Rue Obscure
The medieval heart of Villefranche is a maze of colourful lanes descending towards the port. Don't miss the rue Obscure, a fully covered 13th-century vaulted gallery, one of the oldest in the region. The Saint-Pierre chapel, on the port, was decorated by Jean Cocteau himself, who loved to stay here. Its brightly coloured frescoes alone are worth the detour.
A Real Sandy Beach
A rarity on this pebble coast, Villefranche has a genuine sandy beach, in an arc at the end of the harbour. The shallow, calm water makes it an ideal place for families and swimming. The beach runs along the old town and the railway, in a picturesque setting. In summer it is popular, arrive early to find space.
The Citadel and Museums
Overlooking the port, the 16th-century Saint-Elme citadel today houses several museums and the gardens offer beautiful views over the harbour. Entry is free. It is a parenthesis of calm and culture above the bustle of the port.
How to Get There
The train from Nice-Ville station takes ten minutes and costs less than two euros. Departures are frequent. You can also reach Villefranche on foot via the seaside path from the port of Nice, a lovely walk of about an hour with splendid views. On site, everything is done on foot. Allow at least half a day, or a full day to enjoy the beach and stroll without rushing.
