The Shounga sits on Place Guynemer, at the entrance to Nice's port, towards Quai Rauba Capeu and a short walk from the Promenade des Anglais. Since 2007, it has been one of the best-known sea-view spots in the area, with its large terrace facing the masts and the Mediterranean.
More a cocktail bar than a restaurant proper, the address has made its name as the home of the mojito. People come from breakfast to dinner, taking in brunch and aperitif: mojitos, tapas, burgers, salads and finger food, in a relaxed family atmosphere, with live music in the evening.
Open from April to October, in season daily from 8am to midnight. More of a bar and casual eatery than a gastronomic table. The sea-view terrace is very popular for aperitifs.
Highlights: The sea-view terrace, at the entrance to the port, is the great asset, perfect for a drink in the sun. The mojitos, the cocktail list and the convivial before/afterwork atmosphere are much appreciated. Smiling service and a few simple but good plates, such as the burrata salad, come up in feedback.
Areas for improvement: It is first and foremost a bar: the food stays simple and does not aim at fine dining. Opening is seasonal, from April to October only. The place can be lively and noisy at peak times.
Overall impression: A relaxed address for a mojito or a casual bite facing the sea, at the entrance to the port. To choose for the terrace and the atmosphere more than for the plate.
