PESCA Rooftop — Iconic Nice

The PESCA sits atop the Iconic, the glass building by Daniel Libeskind near Gare Thiers, above the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. Born in Amsterdam, this fish-restaurant concept makes its first appearance in France here. The panoramic terrace overlooks the city centre.

Here, there is no fixed menu. You are welcomed with prosecco, then head to the fishmonger's bench, where the day's fish, shellfish and crustaceans are displayed as at a market. You compose your plate: choice of product, cooking method, seasoning. The offering changes daily with the catch.

Highlights: The "theatre of fish" concept, where you pick your fish at the stall, its cooking and seasoning, surprises and charms. The freshness of the produce is widely praised, tuna, John Dory, sea bream or octopus. The sparkling prosecco welcome, the creative desserts such as the creme brulee served in a sardine tin, the fine cellar and the panoramic view from the Iconic rooftop round out the experience.

Areas for improvement: On busy evenings the service struggles, the concept being demanding on staff. A few slips are reported: an unlaid table, cutlery not changed, a lukewarm limoncello charged for. Grouping the same fish in a single dish is awkward for large tables, and the evening bill, around €90, is high.

Overall impression: An original, convivial seafood experience, worth trying for the freshness and the concept. Better to aim for a quiet evening.
